Chief Executive (CE) Carrie Lam held a press conference on the afternoon of 18 June to offer her “most sincerely” apology to the people of Hong Kong. Journalists repeatedly asked questions on the 5 key demands of the protesters, including no prosecution of protesters; abolish categorisation as “riots”; investigate police brutality; withdraw the amendments; and CE to step down. Carrie Lam failed to respond to all.
Sadly, Lam ignored the demands of the people and once again missed the opportunity to reconcile with the general public and the protesters, while acknowledging that future governance will face great challenges.
Wu Chi-wai, Chairman of the Democratic Party, pointed out that despite “self-reflection” by Lam, he did not feel her sincerity. He believed that she miss the crux of the problem. The public is expecting her to listen to the people. Her apology “will only make the people feel that the government is beyond salvation.”
Millions of people watched the press conference on TV, online and radio live broadcasts. Most netizens posted the “angry” emoticon.
Netizens decided to set the “deadline” at 5 pm, 20 June for a response from the government. Except for Carrie Lam stepping down, the other 4 demands must be met, or actions will escalate on 21 June.
