The Hanseatic port of Gdansk grew wealthy during the Middle Ages, linking inland cities with seaports around Europe. It is now a bustling city with mammoth red-brick churches, colourful townhouses and lively central streets.
A splendid bird’s-eye view of the city from the bell tower of St Mary’s Cathedral can be had, after climbing 405 steps.
The Germans fired the first shots of WWII at Gdansk on 1 September 1939.
