Re: Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Overseas Studies 2012/13
As I officially accept the offer of the captioned Scholarship and prepare to commence my studies at Princeton University in a few weeks’ time, I would like take this opportunity to reiterate my deep gratitude to you, the Board of Trustees of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund and the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council for the recognition, trust and encouragement in awarding this esteemed Scholarship to me.
Sir Edward Youde dedicated much of his life to the education, economy, representative democracy and various other spheres of Hong Kong’s development. As Baroness Dunn put it, ‘All of us, our children, and our grandchildren can live to enjoy what he gave his life to secure.’ Sir Edward was unquestionably a giant, whose height very few of us can hope to reach. We can however all learn from his vision, his humility and, above all, his exemplary zeal for service.
As noted by you, My Lady, during the interview in February, on acceptance of the Scholarship I simultaneously assume the role of an ambassador of Hong Kong overseas. I shall strive to fulfil this obligation with all the strength that I command. Beyond doubt is my huge indebtedness to this city where I have spent the whole of my life and received so much nurture. It has been my wholehearted and invariable pledge to repay my beloved homeland and all predecessors of this society.
