Apart from the need to declare their allegiance to the Basic Law, all candidates in the upcoming Legislative Council general election will also be asked to declare their stand and attitude towards another highly important issue.
350HK (www.350hk.org), the local affiliation of the international body 350.org, is an organization aiming at raising awareness among the general public to the climate crisis, and urging the government to adopt effective measures to tackle the problem. It is now launching a Climate Challenge to all current LegCo candidates, asking them to respond to a series of questions with regard to how best to combat climate change.
“Hong Kong is a leading world-class metropolis. We deserve a legislature that is more aware of, and willing to display leadership in, this civilization-threatening crisis,” said Dr Eddy Lee Wai Choi, Covenor of 350HK. “Climate and weather records are being smashed all around the world. The writing is on the wall. ‘Business as usual’ is not an option. Those who vow to fight for the interest of the people of Hong Kong cannot shun the responsibilities. We are burning fossil fuel to heat up the atmosphere in at astounding rate. According to calculation made by the scientists, the extra heat being absorbed by the Earth right now is equivalent to detonating 4 Hiroshima atomic bombs every single second. Time is running out.”
Under the Climate Challenge, all running LegCo candidates are requested to respond to a Fighting Climate Crisis Survey, and return their answers to 350HK by 20 August 2016. After collecting and analyzing the responses, 350HK will publish its findings on 29 August (Monday) via newspapers, electronic media and online platforms in time for voters to use it as a reference on 4 September – the Polling Day.
The kick-off of this event will be a press conference held from 2:00 to 2:30 pm on 31 July 2016 (Sunday) on the 4th Floor of the Serenade Restaurant, Cultural Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui, whereby 350HK will announce more details about the Climate Challenge.
Prior to the press conference, representatives of the press are cordially invited to join a vegetarian lunch at 1:00 pm at the same venue, during which time the staff of 350HK are happy to disseminate more information about the objective and plans of the organization, as well as the current status on global warming.
The press conference will be followed by a highly photogenic parade – a group of supporters will carry models of 4 atomic bombs, the same size as those dropped at Hiroshima, and walk all the way from the promenade to the Clock Tower, then returning back to the starting point. A movie team from National Geographic will be recording the process for a documentary film they are producing. Before the action ends, a famous Hollywood actress will witness the symbolic act of “defusing the bomb”, thus demonstrating our determination to fight the global warming crisis altogether.
You are most cordially invited to this highly meaningful event. Should you have any enquiries, please kindly contact Mr. Eddy Lee (9738 1551), Mr. Ringo Mak (9677 3955) or Mr. Michael Lai (9844 8492), or email to [email protected].
